Eh, I’m not quite as brash…

Why journalism – or, more properly, editing – is in a sorry state…

From an AP story on the storms in the western US, by Gillian Flaccus (no editor is mentioned, alas):

In Nevada, 1 1/2 inches of rain fell at the airport Wednesday

Wow! Nevada has only one airport! Where is it? Elko? Lovelock? Pahrump?

It looks like I may be the only one in the office today. If that’s the case, I may head home early – like 10AM, and work from home this afternoon. The weather is pretty bad today here in Nawthun Kaliforneeeeuh.

Xmas booty…

Why wasn’t there a Y2K problem?

Because us programmers went and fixed everything. Those “experts” who said there never was a problem, and they use the lack of issues as their primary reason, haven’t a clue.

On that note… I stumbled across this page at the NEIC. I love the caption for Figure 2.

Ahem. Reminder to self. Always check what’s on the stupid clipboard before pasting willy-nilly.

Is it a sign?

A quick note about an observation…

Christmas Day, at the brother-in-law’s in the Canal district of Newport Beach.  His place is on the eastern leg of the canal, with the bluffs across the way.

On top of a telephone pole, near the oil wells, was a bald eagle.

Yes, a bald eagle.  In the middle of urbanization.

He stayed there for over 2 hours.  And we have photographic evidence, with nice Little M using her new camcorder.

Great minds think alike.

Xmas gift to father/stepmother-in-law: $50 Lowe’s gift card. Sent out on Saturday with Xmas card.

Today, received Xmas card from father/stepmother-in-law. Postmarked Saturday. Contains $50 Lowe’s gift card.

And to prove the superiority of international mailing over domestic mailing, the Xmas card I sent to Ruurlo, NL (near Arnhem, the only Dutch city with trolleybuses) on Saturday arrived today. Yes, SAC -> SFO (via truck) -> AMS. Not bad!

(talonvaki, are you planning to go anyplace outside of Amsterdam?)
