We don’t need 2 disasters right now…

I’ve been getting lots of e-mail notifications about earthquakes near the Salton Sea in southern California all afternoon.  This is near the southern section of the San Andreas Fault, the one that hasn’t slipped since about 1690.  Swarms do occur in this area, but the number of 4.0+ quakes, to my memory, seems a bit higher than previous swarms.

Hopefully these are just relieving some stress, and not a precursor.  Although with 1999 Hector Mines, there were several 3+ quakes in the 24 hours before the big 7.1.

I’m glad that the Sacramento area isn’t known for its quakes.  (1892 Vacaville-Winters is a notable exception, two 6.0+ quakes centered probably in the Kirby Hills, and 1889 Antioch.)  There are faults running on the other side of Folsom Lake, though, and the foothills on this side of the Sierra does have a history – most notably around Oroville and Quincy.

Convoy must have peaked in late 1975/early 1976, because I associate it more with 1975.

The quality of prisoners is diminishing

Friday – I go to to the Roseville DMV office (highway_1, you must be familiar with this particular den of inefficiency).  The California DMV – where all stereotypes of state bureaucratic agencies dealing with vehicles and driving originated.  Where having an appointment guarantees you only a 30 minute wait.

Why would I brave entering the steaming cesspool?  My new personalized plates are ready.

The guy pulls them out of the filing cabinet, and…there’s an error.

True, M and N look somewhat alike, but they are reading this from a DMV printout, not messy handwriting.  And I applied on-line, and the confirmation note even stated the correct letter.

So what does that buy me?  Another 8 to 12 week wait.  At least the supervisor was able to override the $51 charge.

I gotta say this – the staff was wonderful, even joking about how you can’t trust prisoners at Folsom any more.  And the guy even told me that they have received letters in the plates complaining about conditions, that they are innocent – and once even finding a shiv.

Gotta love those Brits

Even though it’s not even an ancient measure used in the UK, this summary made this American smile (emphasis mine):

Surge in alcohol-related deaths
The number of alcohol-related deaths has increased by nearly a fifth in four years, figures show.

Oh, yeah, the high temperature has been under 90°/32° the past few days.  Yay!
